Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) History

In 2006, five major credit card companies (American Express, Discover, JCB International, MasterCard, and Visa) established the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). The goal of the council is to protect cardholder data and provide unified requirements for merchants, service providers, and payment processors. To facilitate the objectives of PCI SSC, the council developed Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

Who Must Comply With PCI Standards

According to Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC), “The PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and other applicable PCI Standards are intended for entities that store, process or transmit payment account data, entities accepting or processing payment transactions, and for developers and manufacturers of software and devices used in those transactions.” Adherence to these standards is crucial to protect cardholder data and defend payment card transactions from breaches and fraud.
